Yale & Towne Locks

Linus Yale was an innovative man who helped to revolutionize the industry of locks. Through his invention of various types of lock, Linus helped to create a new frontier on which society could place its trust. All of a sudden, people are able to keep things safe, but more importantly private. Although this may seem like their only application, locks have actually left a much stronger imprint on our history. The frontiers which were broken by affordable locks firmly established the concept of ownership, which before was not a very realistic notion, as most things were owned and used by the community and family as opposed to the individual. The increased security in financial institutions for example, allowed for broader and more substantial lending across the nation. It can therefore be said, that Linus Yale was responsible for the expansion of America in the forms of highways, skyscrapers, and business. Ford, Microsoft, even Yale and Towne company itself can attribute its success to financial support from banks and governments, who were first enabled to lend on such a large scale because of Linus Yale. Who could have thought that such a small thing that is taken so much for granted today could have had such a huge impact on history, and could have so much shaped our very values and culture.
